Motorcycle Insurance

Most states require all motorcycle owners to have motorcycle insurance. The good news is that basic insurance is usually all that’s required. It is inexpensive, and will help you avoid paying heavy out of pocket costs if you get into an accident.

Anyone who owns and drives a motorcycle needs motorcycle coverage. It’s the same as if you were driving a car. You will likely need liability coverage, which is the least amount of insurance you can have and legally operate your vehicle. Additional coverage can include collision insurance, uninsured motorist insurance or a combination.

Collision insurance is a smart add on to basic motorcycle coverage. Collision coverage pays for almost any damage that occurs to your motorcycle. It will even likely still apply if you are liable for the accident.

Comprehensive coverage applies to thefts, fires and other damage your motorcycle might encounter. Basically, comprehensive coverage provides more in-depth protection than liability or collision does on its own.

Uninsured motorist coverage is for when you’re in an accident with a motorist who doesn’t have insurance. Or who doesn’t have enough insurance. It pays for damages to your motorcycle because the person at fault is unable to do it.

Uninsured motorist coverage is recommended because when you’re in an accident, you don’t want to be stuck paying for damages someone else caused. Then there is provisional motorcycle coverage, which provides compensation for a possible hospital stay or lost wages.
